Renovating a Minoltaflex 2

Dismantling the camera front end

The bit I did not have to do was to remove the covering to get at the screws holding the focusing plate. This had already been done and three of the brass screws had been badly damaged in the subsequent processes.

I refurbished the slots in the screws by holding them in the vice, with the thread protected by some wood, and carefully scraping out the slot with a screwdriver. The screwdriver had to be sharpened so that it edges would give clean cuts. The sharpening was done by simply filing square screwdriver’s edges.

It is simple enough taking the focusing plate off as it is help by the four black screws. The holes for them are indicated by the red circles in the picture.

The yellow circles show the brass screws. These hold the lens plate to the focusing plate and are not removed at this point.

The focusing plate has to be moved upward, along the plane of the camera, and then lifted off. It does not simply lift up and off.

Once the focusing plate is off the camera body,  remove the four brass screws holding the lens plate.

Note:

There may be spacer washers between the focusing plate and the focusing mechanism and between the lens plate and the focusing plate. These are there to establish focus at infinity and to make sure the lens are parallel to the film plane.

I misplaced mine partly because I did not realise why they were there. It wasn’t until after initial re-assembly and a roll of film that I realised that infinity focus could be a problem. I had to manufacture some spacers.

You can now lift the lens plate from the focusing plate.

The picture has arrows to show where the pressure has to be applied. So you push down on the upper end of the lens/shutter unit while pulling up on the lower end.

It requires a small amount of force as well as a little push lengthwise as it starts to go through.

The viewing lens will also get in the way. It can be removed first.

To remove the viewing lens, unscrew the retaining ring shown as 1. in the picture.

Them remove the collar shown as 2

Turn the unit over and remove the collar ring from the rear of the lens.

The lense will now come out of the housing - with a little turning and twisting.

The lens plate is connected to the focussing plate through the flash wire. You simply loosen the screw on the focussing plate and slip the connector out.

If you remove the screw completely, the spring loaded middle of the flash post can pop out. The spring is quite fine and can disappear.
